Synoply Vlog 1 – Setting up my home YouTube studio

[Music/Footage]
So I am super excited because I’ve decided to convert this loft at the top of my house into my home YouTube studio. I’m super committed to making videos on a regular basis and so I just thought it was super important that I had somewhere that I could just go to film videos all the time and we weren’t using this space. I’m actually going to document the whole thing about how I did it because I don’t know how I’m going to do it. I’m going to work out home I’m going to do it. I’m going to vlog about how much it’ll cost, how long it all took, what I learned from the experience, and if you want to set up your own YouTube studio at home, maybe things I would have done differently or things that I want to do in the future.

For now I’m just going to quickly take you on a tour. At the moment, we’re just using it for storage of just rubbish really. I’m going to clear away all that sort of stuff and then I have been watching other people’s YouTube videos about having someone to have a roll with backdrops. I’m thinking that side is probably going to be that but because obviously the height and the shape, it’s difficult. I’m imagining I’m going to have to base all my videos of me sitting in front of the backdrop or something. I don’t know.

Essentially, I’ve made this decision that I’m going to have a home YouTube video. I’ve made this decision that I’m going to have a home YouTube studio. I pretty much is going to take in the journey. I’m going to vlog. I’m going to blog and talk about how I work out what to do with this space, how much it’ll cost, how long it takes, what I learned, what you should do in your own YouTube studio.

Stick around. I think step one is definitely that I’m going to contact my best friend who’s an interior designer and see if she can make sense of this space because don’t know what to do with it but it’s going to be an epic YouTube studio. Just watch.

Hi! So I got an update for you guys on my home YouTube studio. Last time I showed you that we had some cabinets and shelving and just a lot of junk up here. The first step was that we pretty much cleared all of that out. My husband removed the cabinetry. The next step was that I was meant to sand the walls and then paint, but I was away for the weekend and my husband actually surprised me and just did it all for me, which was so sweet. But obviously, it means I have no footage showing you guys what happened. So I’ll just take you on a little tour and then I will make sure that I keep you updated on what I do next for the home YouTube studio.

You may remember that that was the loft entrance and then it’s all just been freshly painted in this white colour. Then my favourite feature, my backdrop wall. It’s this amazing wallpaper which I found which I’m going to link in the description below and I’m always going to do a blog post telling you guys about how much everything costs. I absolutely just love it. It’s just my favourite thing ever, but you may notice that it’s not actually in line so I don’t know if you can tell that this is meant to line up to here. I didn’t say anything to my husband because I just thought it was so sweet they even did this for me. I’m sure (inaudible) doesn’t line up. I just think it looks so cool.

One of the things I’ve talked about with my friend Emma was that I just wanted a really distinctive backdrop because I wanted people to be scrolling through YouTube and be able to know that a video was mine before they even sort of like looked at the description or anything like that. I was trying to think of something that like represented I guess what my channel was about and I guess you know we’ll just give people a really quick snapshot into like I guess my style or something like that. I just wanted to represent what the channel is about. I just absolutely adore this retro sort of stacked TVs looks. I think this is going to be the backdrop for pretty much every video I make in the studio.

I am also contemplating on the opposite wall doing like some roll down backdrops and things like that I’m going to have a rig to do like some overhead filming where I don’t know yet. I just want to have it all. I want to have everything that I need so then that way, there’s no like stopping me from making videos.

Soon enough, you’ll be seeing some YouTube videos with this backdrop. There’s obviously still some work to do like I’ve got downlights on at the moment in which the lighting is terrible. I obviously need to turn those off, get studio lights, tripod camera. I also want to get a black armchair to sit on. I think that’s pretty much it and then I can get started. I’m looking forward to the next step.

It’s been about three weeks since I last updated you guys with what I’ve been doing in the studio. I wanted to do a quick update, but before I do, I wanted to reveal to you my YouTube uniform. You might be thinking what’s a YouTube uniform? Well, I’ve decided that for every video that I film in the studio, I’m going to be wearing this t-shirt which has my Synoply branding on it. I’m going to do a whole video about why I think you should have a YouTube uniform and all the benefits of all of that.

But for right now, let me show you what I’ve been up to at the studio. Now the first thing you may have noticed in this video is that the lighting is considerably better than the previous footage and that’s because I’ve got some studio lights. They’re not mine. I borrowed them from the office just to test out what the lighting looks like and I’m so happy with it. I think it looks really good. Now I have to go on my own journey of buying lights or renting them. I’m going to compare both options and see what’s better.

I’ve also purchased this tripod and I’m really actually unhappy about it. I needed a tripod for an event really urgently and so I just bought one. I just walked into the store and just bought the first thing I saw. I’m not convinced that I have the best one be honest. There are just a few things that I don’t like so I’m going to go on this whole journey of doing some research about tripods and hopefully work out what I’m going to do with that one if I keep it or if I try sell it and buy something else.

In the corner, let me just show you, I’ve got some interesting things that you’re going to be seeing some reviews on—some different bits and pieces of equipment that I’m going to be doing. What’s left? I need to get my own lights. I will get a chair like a black armchair or something for me to sit on. Then most importantly, I need a camera. The DSLR camera that you may have seen there is just for photography. Again, I borrowed it from our office to see what it looks like. Now I need to find my own camera. I think I’m definitely going to start by renting. I’m not going to buy one. I’ll obviously update you guys and let you know how I go with that. This is where we’re at and I’m feeling pretty excited.

Look what just arrived! My camera for the studio. It’s in this box and not the proper Canon box because I’ve actually rented this. I didn’t buy it. I’m going to do a whole video about why I rented it instead of buying. Let me just show you what’s in here.

I’m so excited because my lights just arrived. I’m going to a full video for you guys about which ones I got because I actually bought these. I’m going to do a full video about that but I just want to do a quick sort of unboxing to show you what’s in here.

I have to check but I’m pretty certain it came like eight or something of this watt and I saw somewhere online that you want to look for 55,000K because that’s what makes lights white. Otherwise, they look like a bit too warm.

I’m not going to lie. This was extremely difficult to set up because there are no instructions. Once that worked, I had to do it so it’s not too bad. Obviously, it hooks up to there and there there’s a soft cover, but what I’m going to do is I’m going to make a separate video about how to set up these lights. It didn’t come with any instructions. It’s a bit complicated but once you work it out, it’s not too bad.

I’ve just realized I’ve put these the wrong way. I’ve made it like a horizontal light instead of a portrait light. I’m going to have to go and undo it all and flip this around.
Alrighty! What you just saw being carried up the stairs was the very last piece of equipment or item that I needed for the studio and it was my armchair. Let me show you. Now I actually wanted to get a different one from Fantastic Furniture, but it wouldn’t fit through the loft opening so I ended up getting this armchair and the funniest thing is that it’s called the boss armchair. I thought that was pretty appropriate. I didn’t even realize honestly until I got it home and unpacked the box.

It’s quite nice. It’s like a leather look, adjustable height armchair so pretty cool. That’s it. That’s the last item that I needed to get. There are two items that I didn’t show you that I had purchased.
I went to test out filming the other day and just totally forgot that a mic would be handy. I ended up getting this—I think this was from Store DJ. I have read lots of reviews that this is a really good mic and the cheapest place I could find it was Store DJ. I’ll put that in the link in the description.

Then I went to test the DSLR and realized that when you rent a camera or when you rent it from this particular company, it doesn’t come with a memory card so I had to buy a memory card, which I haven’t done in years. Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin. I didn’t know much about memory cards. I ended up having to do a lot of research and ended up picking, let me show you, this one from SanDisk. It was quite hard to find which one I wanted. Thankfully I ended up finding this table from SanDisk, which pretty much said like do you want it to film in 4K video and do you want this and you want that and then it sort of like recommends which one is good.

I’ll write a full blog post about how to pick a memory card so I’ll put that in the description as well. I just can’t believe how this little thing is the most expensive piece of equipment in the studio. Besides the camera but it costs more like this costs more than renting the camera does for like two or three months. It was like $170, but I just felt like I’ll probably do a whole video about why I picked this because I just didn’t want to get one that was too small like I’m only really filming videos so it’s going to fill up pretty quickly.

That’s it. I am now ready to film. There’s something that I wanted to tell you guys was that from the start of this vlog, the very first piece of footage I filmed for now, it’s been almost three months. Next week will be three months. If you’re in the process of trying to set up a YouTube studio for yourself or even if you’re just working on any project and you feel like it’s taking forever, well yeah, it kind of does. It takes forever. I work full-time, I run a business. I have a husband and I have my family and friends.

So there’s always something happening and so there’s just been so many distractions. It’s been difficult to sort of get it all happening. Now that I have it all set up and I think for me, I just describe it as perfect. I don’t want to push this whole like perfect thing because I’m definitely not someone who thinks things have to be perfect before you can do or begin.

For me, I’ve done filming in the past and sort of filmed without a microphone or filmed without lights and worked out that those two were pretty key items, but like this armchair totally unnecessary. Tripod, you could just buy the cheapest one on earth and it will do the trick. I should just say now as well I’m going to do a whole separate video or videos about how to set up a YouTube studio. This is really just the vlog for showing you guys behind the scenes of the journey of doing it all.

Don’t feel like you need to have all of this before you start. If you’re wanting to start YouTube and you can’t afford to you know to buy the things that I’m going to recommend, then just start with what you’ve got. I’ve been vlogging on my smartphone because I didn’t have really a camera that was suitable for vlogging. I wanted to start with smartphone vlogging anyway to see what it was like and then I’m going to go through all the (inaudible) and get like more expensive cameras and see how it compares or whether it’s worth it or not.

The other thing as well that even though this has taken three months, I didn’t stop like I still was working on other aspects of Synoply. I was writing our blog. I was filming vlogs. I was editing. While I’ve been waiting for the studio to be ready to film my more sort of like how-to or tutorial type videos, I was still working on the business. I think procrastination is something that hits most of us. It’s really easy to sort of like fall into that trap of waiting for things to be perfect before you take the leap. I don’t know how they’re like how or what I can suggest that makes you sort of just take that leap, but I think don’t keep thinking I need this or I need that before you start.

Saturday is that day that I’m going to be doing the first day of filming. I’m going to do another vlog and I’m going to be calling it something like my first day in the studio. I’m going to tell you guys about how many videos I filmed, just any challenges or things that I came up across on that. Then I’m also going to be doing like I said a whole heap of videos about the equipment, everything like how to set up a home YouTube studio. This is the vlog but they’ll be more like how-to type videos that come up as well.

Something else that I’ve decided if I’m going to be uploading every Monday and Friday. I’ve been filming the last three months and I feel like I can get two videos out per week, not necessarily always vlogs. It might be just you do videos. And then I’m also going to try this thing called mini vlogs which I just made up myself, but essentially to me, like I’m calling the mini vlogs where I film on my smartphone and it might just be like me going to like a networking event or something like that and what I’m going to do is I’m going to edit them on my smartphone.

Normally, like a full-on vlog, I’ll edit it on a like different software and I’ll do a recommendation on the software and I’ll do recommendations on the equipment, but for this, I’m just going to do smartphone and some sort of app.

If you want to see more of my videos that are going to come out, if you subscribe, they’re going to come out every Monday and Friday and sometimes Wednesdays. I don’t know what you think of this vlog. I hope you like it. Could you like give it a thumbs up so that I know? I don’t even know myself because I’ve been filming it over such a long period of time. It’s going to be interesting to see what it looks like when it’s all together.

I think that’s enough for today. I think I don’t even know how long this vlog is going to be or if it’s in multiple parts. I just wanted to tell you guys that I’m done. I’ve got everything that I need for the studio. I set it all up it took me just under three months and I’m going to stop filming and hopefully bring you guys tons and tons of content around video. I really hope you enjoy following me on this journey so I’ll see you in my next video.
